A tiny cafe, with a large personality. A great example of the contemporary cafe lifestyle which the city of Brighton offers and is so popular.  They cater for those who would like to start their day with a full breakfast, just cake & a drink, or even something a little more fishy.

TeaMilkOneSugar:

Another old haunt, but not been here for a couple of years. Inside Out is a compact but light and airy café in the North Laine area. The name derives from the fact that the seating inside and out appears to be a continuous bendy concrete wall. Something similar to Gaudi, but not as extreme. We chose to sit outside on the small deck in the sun and wind.

Although I've not visited for a while, the tea and cake here is always a treat, and a good place to meet friends who live on the other side of town. Nice to see the menu hasn't changed, but unfortunately the kedgeree was off, so I went with the second choice; kippers with mushrooms, salad and toast and a drink of orange, apple and ginger juice (nothing if not predictable in my choice of drinks).

The juice was good and clearly freshly made and could've done with a bit more of a ginger kick for me; but that’s just my personal taste. The food was fine, a half kipper fillet (was sure it was plural on the menu), with sliced avocado, salad with honey mustard dressing and fried mushrooms. Fine, not great, not spectacular. And the service was little slack if truth be told. My plate didn't arrive until a little while after the others and was also missing the toast, which then didn't arrive on the first time of asking. So by the time it did arrive most of the plate had been cleared. Having said that, it was very good toast when it did arrive! And I had NoEggs' poached egg to have with it.

This wasn't my best experience of Inside Out. It won’t stop me going again, but I probably won’t order the same next time.

Mr NoEggs:

I'd never even heard of this cafe, despite walking by regularly and it having a very colourful and distinctive exterior.  Like Billies and Dumb Waiter, Inside Out offers a more eclectic menu then found at many of the city's more traditional cafes and caused us to ask for more time from our distracted waitress to ponder our choices. As my second choice, the Kedgeree (clearly popular), was unavailable I settled on their version of bubble and squeak with bacon, the superbly named 'Bubbalicious'.

Served with a spicy arrabbiata-like sauce, the creamy bubble & squeak was perfectly accompanied by smoked crispy bacon and spinach.  This was a well presented and tasty breakfast and a match for any other cafe in the area.  The only downside to the whole experience was that as TeaMilkOneSugar was left waiting for his breakfast issues to be resolved, the poached egg which was to be donated went cold, what a waste.  On a more positive note, special praise must go to the coffee they were using.  My latte was a great example of a good cup of Joe and the glass that it was served in made an interesting way to experience it.

Breakfast delivery problems aside this was a fine experience for me and well worth a second visit.  With the option to eat out on the veranda on a sunny day this is a very popular cafe and with not many tables on offer may require a short wait.  If a more eclectic breakfast menu is to your taste and you have no real rush to eat then this could very well be your ideal place.  Kedgeree, next time you're mine!

Waited 15 minutes to order, then left after waiting an hour with no sign of food and no apology. Wasn’t the only one who did this while there. Three waiters, but one tiny kitchen unable to cope when most tables are occupied. People were also complaing about the food so not didn’t look like it was even worth the wait.

Been here a few times for brunch and always enjoyed.

Full English uses good ingredients and the potion is a decent size. Would recommend the Lemon Presse which is a drink I havn’t found served elsewhere in Brighton.

Great food here, English breakfast is the best! Only annoyance is they don’t do the Tastecard on Saturdays when this is not stated on the Tastecard Ap which is a shame they haven’t sorted this out yet…big portions though so worth a visit..
